Every Word That Starts With X: All 134, Counted and Listed
X has the smallest starting-letter section in our dictionary.
Out of 172,727 accepted entries, only 134 begin with X. For comparison, Z has 532, Q has 822 and J has 1,375.
But X has an advantage those larger letters do not: the entire section is small enough to publish and check in full.
That is what this page does.
Every X-word accepted by Find the Word appears below—134 entries, with none omitted.
How I counted them
I searched Find the Word English Dictionary v1.0, our fixed ENABLE-based dictionary containing 172,727 lowercase entries of at least three letters.
For this page, a word counts only when its first stored letter is X.
Inflected and derived forms count separately when the dictionary contains them separately, so xerox, xeroxed, xeroxes and xeroxing are four entries.
The broader preparation and validation rules are explained in How We Check Words.
The final count is:
134 words beginning with X.
That figure is much smaller than every other starting-letter section in the file.
It does not automatically prove that X is the hardest letter to play. Difficulty also depends on familiarity, word length and recall under pressure. I compare those questions separately in Which Letter Is Actually the Hardest?.
Here, the question is narrower:
What exactly exists behind X?
Only 15 X-words have five letters or fewer
The first surprise is not simply that X has few words.
It is that most of those 134 words are fairly long.
Only 15 contain between three and five letters:
3 letters
xis
4 letters
xyst
5 letters
xebec, xenia, xenic, xenon, xeric, xerox, xerus, xylan, xylem, xylol, xylyl, xysti, xysts
That gives:
- 1 three-letter word;
- 1 four-letter word;
- 13 five-letter words;
- 15 short X-words in total.
The other 119 entries contain six letters or more.
So 88.8% of the entire X section sits beyond the five-letter mark.
That is what makes X particularly unforgiving when only a few seconds remain. The dictionary does contain more answers, but very few are short enough to appear instantly unless they are already familiar.
Xis is especially important because it is the only three-letter word beginning with X in this dictionary.
There is no second three-letter fallback.
Four families contain 119 of the 134 X-words
The full list looks specialised, but it is far less random than it first appears.
Four three-letter openings dominate:
XYL- — 36 words
XER- — 32
XEN- — 30
XAN- — 21
Together:
36 + 32 + 30 + 21 = 119.
So the same four families account for 88.8% of every X-word in the dictionary.
The remaining 15 words are spread across:
XYS- — 8
XI- — 5
XEB- — 2
This is the part of the count that changed how I look at X.
There may be 134 individual entries, but there are only seven actual opening routes to search.
The complete 134-word X list
Rather than dumping one long alphabetical block, I have grouped the complete dictionary section by those seven routes.
XAN- — 21 words
xanthan, xanthans, xanthate, xanthates, xanthein, xantheins, xanthene, xanthenes, xanthic, xanthin, xanthine, xanthines, xanthins, xanthoma, xanthomas, xanthomata, xanthone, xanthones, xanthophyll, xanthophylls, xanthous
This family contributes no word of five letters or fewer.
Its usefulness comes mostly after the player already knows one of the longer xanth- spellings.
XEB- — 2 words
xebec, xebecs
That is the entire family.
Xebec matters disproportionately because it is one of only 15 short X-words.
There is nothing else hiding behind XEB-.
XEN- — 30 words
xenia, xenial, xenias, xenic, xenobiotic, xenobiotics, xenodiagnoses, xenodiagnosis, xenodiagnostic, xenogamies, xenogamy, xenogeneic, xenogenies, xenogeny, xenograft, xenografts, xenolith, xenolithic, xenoliths, xenon, xenons, xenophile, xenophiles, xenophobe, xenophobes, xenophobia, xenophobias, xenophobic, xenophobically, xenotropic
Four are particularly useful in the short pool:
xenia, xenic, xenon
and the slightly longer family grows quickly once xen- is active.
For me, xenon is one of the most useful X anchors because the spelling is familiar and compact.
XER- — 32 words
xerarch, xeric, xerographic, xerographically, xerographies, xerography, xerophile, xerophilies, xerophilous, xerophily, xerophthalmia, xerophthalmias, xerophthalmic, xerophyte, xerophytes, xerophytic, xerophytism, xerophytisms, xeroradiographies, xeroradiography, xerosere, xeroseres, xeroses, xerosis, xerothermic, xerotic, xerox, xeroxed, xeroxes, xeroxing, xerus, xeruses
The short entries are:
xeric, xerox, xerus
This route also shows why dictionary membership and ordinary writing are different questions.
The lowercase spelling xerox and its forms are present in this game dictionary. That tells us they can be accepted here. It is not a general editorial recommendation about how a brand name should be used in formal writing.
For gameplay, the membership question is all that matters.
XI- — 5 words
xiphisterna, xiphisternum, xiphoid, xiphoids, xis
This is a strange route because four of its five words belong to the longer xiph- group while the fifth is the shortest X-word in the entire dictionary:
xis
That makes XI- tiny overall but impossible to ignore in a timed round.
XYL- — 36 words
xylan, xylans, xylem, xylems, xylene, xylenes, xylidin, xylidine, xylidines, xylidins, xylitol, xylitols, xylocarp, xylocarps, xylograph, xylographer, xylographers, xylographic, xylographical, xylographies, xylographs, xylography, xyloid, xylol, xylols, xylophagous, xylophone, xylophones, xylophonist, xylophonists, xylose, xyloses, xylotomies, xylotomy, xylyl, xylyls
This is the largest X family.
Its short entries are unusually useful:
xylan, xylem, xylol, xylyl
And several familiar longer anchors can open larger families:
xylene
xylitol
xylophone
This is the X route I would expect many players to recognise most easily because xylophone is one of the rare everyday-ish X starters people learn early.
But the count shows why stopping at xylophone wastes the route. There are 36 XYL-entries in total.
XYS- — 8 words
xyst, xyster, xysters, xysti, xystoi, xystos, xysts, xystus
This is the complete XYS- family.
Three of its members are part of the short pool:
xyst, xysti, xysts
Xyst is also the only four-letter word beginning with X in the dictionary.
That makes the route much more useful in a short-word emergency than its total of eight might suggest.
The seven routes really are complete
The full dictionary therefore divides into:
- XAN-: 21
- XEB-: 2
- XEN-: 30
- XER-: 32
- XI-: 5
- XYL-: 36
- XYS-: 8
The arithmetic closes exactly:
21 + 2 + 30 + 32 + 5 + 36 + 8 = 134.
There is no eighth opening family elsewhere in the file.
That makes X different from most letters covered on this site.
With a broad letter such as S or C, knowing a few major families still leaves a large number of possible branches.
With X, the route map can actually be completed.
The short pool is concentrated too
The 15 words of five letters or fewer come from only six of the seven routes.
XEB-
xebec
XEN-
xenia, xenic, xenon
XER-
xeric, xerox, xerus
XI-
xis
XYL-
xylan, xylem, xylol, xylyl
XYS-
xyst, xysti, xysts
XAN- contributes none.
The visible count is:
1 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 3 = 15.
That gives X a useful two-layer search.
When time is short, six routes matter.
When there is enough time to search the entire dictionary section, add XAN- and the longer extensions.
Families are more useful than isolated long words
A long X-word is often more useful as evidence of a family than as something I would try to recall independently.
Take xerox.
The dictionary contains:
xerox, xeroxed, xeroxes, xeroxing
One remembered base produces four checked entries.
Xylophone gives:
xylophone, xylophones, xylophonist, xylophonists
Xenophobe opens:
xenophobe, xenophobes, xenophobia, xenophobias, xenophobic, xenophobically
And xerophyte connects to:
xerophyte, xerophytes, xerophytic, xerophytism, xerophytisms
I would still enter the obvious base first.
Trying to reconstruct xenophobically while xenon is sitting unused would be the wrong priority in a timed round.
But once the easy answer has been submitted, the family is worth checking.
Not every familiar X string belongs here
This article counts words that begin with X.
That sounds obvious, but X is much more common elsewhere inside English words.
Examples such as:
box, fix, fox, hex, mix, tax, vex, wax
may be useful X-containing words in another game format, but none belongs in this list because none starts with X.
The distinction is important on The Verbarium because Find the Word can require a specific starting letter.
A word containing X somewhere inside it does not solve an X-start round.
Likewise, two-letter entries accepted by some external word games are irrelevant here because this dictionary has a three-letter minimum.
The page is deliberately narrower: exact X-start membership in this particular 172,727-word file.
What the count does not prove
The list proves that X has 134 accepted starting words in this dictionary.
It does not prove:
- that every English dictionary contains the same 134;
- that every listed word is familiar to ordinary players;
- that an obscure accepted word is worth studying;
- that X is automatically the hardest letter during actual play;
- or that a word rejected here is not legitimate somewhere else.
This is a fixed ENABLE-based game dictionary, and its vocabulary has the strengths and gaps of that source.
The value of counting it is precision: when I say there are 134 X-words here, I can show all 134.
How to know you have searched all of X
Most starting letters have enough branches that I can finish a round still wondering whether I forgot an entire part of the alphabet.
X is different.
Every accepted X-word on this site starts through exactly seven doors:
XAN — XEB — XEN — XER — XI — XYL — XYS
There are no others.
That creates a useful post-round diagnosis.
Suppose I played:
xis, xenon, xeric, xylem
but missed several obvious possibilities.
I can reconstruct the search instead of simply telling myself that I “need more X-words.”
I reached:
XI
XEN
XER
XYL
I never opened:
XEB
XYS
XAN
That is a route problem.
A different round might reach all seven families but still produce very few words. That means the route map worked; the missing skill is depth inside those routes.
Those are different weaknesses.
And X is small enough that the distinction is provable.
After XAN, XEB, XEN, XER, XI, XYL and XYS have all been checked, there is no reason to keep searching sideways for an eighth opening.
The dictionary has already shown us every place an X-word can begin.
For X, the list is not merely a collection of 134 answers.
It is the complete map.
