This page explains what The Verbarium is and is not, and what you can
reasonably expect from it. It sits alongside our
Terms & Conditions,
which set out the full legal position. Where the two differ, the Terms &
Conditions take precedence.
What this site is for
The Verbarium is an editorial word-game journal. Everything here — the word
lists, the strategy guides, the etymology pieces, and the Find the Word
game — exists for general interest and entertainment. It is not professional,
legal, medical, educational or financial advice, and it is not a reference work
you should rely on for anything consequential.
About the word lists
This is the part worth reading carefully.
Word validity is not universal. Different word games use
different official lexicons, and those lexicons disagree with each other and
change over time. A word that scores in one game may be rejected in another, and
a word valid last year may be removed this year.
Our lists are curated and checked by hand rather than auto-generated, and we
try hard to be accurate. Even so:
- we do not guarantee that any word we list is valid in the specific game you are playing;
- we do not guarantee that a list is complete;
- definitions we give are short, practical glosses to help you remember a word — they are not authoritative dictionary definitions.
Always check the official word list for the game you are playing
before disputing a word. We are not responsible for lost games,
challenged words, or arguments with your opponent.
If you spot an error, please tell
us. We read everything and correct mistakes quickly.
About the game
Find the Word is free and provided as is, for fun. We do not
guarantee it will always be available, work on every device or browser, or be
free of bugs. Game progress may occasionally be lost — for example, if you clear
your browser data, if a match disconnects, or during maintenance. If you want
your progress kept across devices, create an account, but treat even that as a
convenience rather than a guarantee.
The in-game opponent in Adventure mode is a pacing device, not a real player
and not a measure of anyone’s ability.
Editorial independence
Articles on this site are written independently. We are not paid to recommend
any product, service, game or dictionary, and no advertiser has any say over what
we publish or how we phrase it.
The site carries advertising, which is what keeps it free to read. Those
advertisements are supplied by third parties, are not selected or endorsed by us,
and their presence next to an article says nothing about its content. Anything
you buy from an advertiser is a matter between you and them.
External links
We link to other websites where it is useful. We do not control them, do not
endorse them, and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy
practices. Following a link is at your own discretion.
Liability
Our responsibilities and their limits are set out in full in
Terms & Conditions,
sections 11 and 12. In short: the site is provided as is, we make no
warranties about it, and our liability is limited to the extent the law allows —
but we never exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by our
negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
