Words That Start With K: A Route Map for 1,715 Accepted Words

KN- begins 225 words in our dictionary.

Not one of them has three letters.

KI-, by comparison, begins 471 words and provides six three-letter answers.

That difference matters in a timed K round. The largest-looking family is not always the best place to search first, and the famous silent-K words are only one part of a much larger map.

I counted every K-entry in Find the Word English Dictionary v1.0 and found 1,715 in total. Only 354 contain three to five letters.

Those 354 short entries are concentrated enough that five routes—KI-, KA-, KE-, KO- and KN-—cover 292 of them.

That is 82.5% of the short K pool.

So my K strategy is no longer “remember more K-words.” It is “know which route I have not searched yet.”

The method

Find the Word uses a fixed ENABLE-based dictionary containing 172,727 lowercase entries of at least three letters.

For this page I counted:

• every entry beginning with K;
• the second letter of each entry;
• all entries containing three to five letters;
• and all three-letter K entries.

Inflected and derived forms count separately when the dictionary stores them separately.

K has 13 second-letter routes:

The totals balance across all 13 routes.

One feature is immediately visible: the ordinary vowel routes dominate.

KA-, KE-, KI-, KO- and KU- contain 1,286 of the 1,715 K-words—75.0% of the entire section.

Among short words, those five routes contain 272 of 354, or 76.8%.

K therefore looks more irregular than it actually is.

Start with KI-, KA- and KE-

These three routes alone contain 216 of the 354 short K-words.

That is 61.0%.

They also contain 19 of the 27 three-letter answers.

KI-: 75 short words

Familiar anchors include:

kid, kids, kick, kill, kiln, kilo, kilt, kin, kind, king, kink, kiosk, kip, kiss, kit, kite, kitty, kiwi

The route is broad enough that I would not treat those as one memorisation list.

I would split KI- mentally into smaller openings:

KID-
kid, kids, kiddo, kiddy

KIL-
kill, kills, kiln, kilns, kilo, kilos, kilt, kilts

KIN-
kin, kind, kinds, kine, king, kings, kink, kinks

KIT-
kit, kits, kite, kites, kith, kitty

That creates several recall handles without requiring the player to know all 471 KI-entries.

KA-: 73 short words

The familiar side includes:

kale, karma, karat, kart, kayak, kayo, kava, kazoo

The less familiar side expands quickly:

kab, kae, kaf, kagu, kaif, kain, kaon, kaph, karoo

That is why a raw alphabetical list is not very useful. It places kale and kaon beside each other as though they had equal practical value.

They do not, in my judgment.

I would use familiar KA-words first and treat the obscure forms as later vocabulary rather than emergency answers.

KE-: 68 short words

This route offers several ordinary clusters:

kebab, keg, keel, keen, keep, kelp, kemp, ken, kept, kerb, kern, keto, key

KE- also provides the largest three-letter K group, with seven entries.

It deserves an early search even though KI- is larger overall.

All 27 three-letter K-words

The complete group is small enough to publish in full.

KA — 6

kab, kae, kaf, kas, kat, kay

KE — 7

kea, kef, keg, ken, kep, kex, key

KH — 1

khi

KI — 6

kid, kif, kin, kip, kir, kit

KO — 6

koa, kob, koi, kop, kor, kos

KU — 1

kue

The visible total is:

6 + 7 + 1 + 6 + 6 + 1 = 27

There are no three-letter entries under:

KB-, KL-, KN-, KR-, KV-, KW- or KY-.

That last fact changes how I would use this list.

When only a few seconds remain, I would search KA-, KE-, KI- and KO- before trying to reconstruct a KN-, KR- or KL-word.

Those four routes contain 25 of the 27 three-letter answers.

KN- is large, but it solves a different problem

The 225 KN-entries make it K’s fourth-largest route.

There are 35 KN-words containing three to five letters:

knack, knap, knaps, knar, knars, knaur, knave, knead, knee, kneed, kneel, knees, knell, knelt, knew, knife, knish, knit, knits, knob, knobs, knock, knoll, knop, knops, knosp, knot, knots, knout, know, known, knows, knur, knurl, knurs

The count is useful, but its shape matters.

There are no three-letter KN-words.

The route begins paying off at four and five letters through familiar answers such as:

knee, knew, knit, knob, knot, know, knife, knock

The opening K is silent in many familiar KN-words, which can cause the player to retrieve them mentally as N-sounding words instead of K answers.

That makes KN- valuable after the immediate three-letter anchors have been exhausted.

For this page, the gameplay rule is simpler:

Do not forget KN-. But do not mistake its large total for a supply of ultra-short answers.

KO- gives six more three-letter exits

KO- contains only 129 words overall, far fewer than KI-, KE-, KA- or KN-.

Yet it supplies six of the 27 three-letter answers:

koa, kob, koi, kop, kor, kos

Its short pool contains 41 entries.

More familiar possibilities include:

koala, koan, kohl, koi, kook, kopek, koto

That makes KO- disproportionately useful when the timer is low.

KN- contains 225 total entries but zero three-letter words.

KO- contains 129 total entries but six.

Total dictionary size and emergency usefulness are not the same measure.

The routes most players can ignore until later

Once the five major routes have been checked, K fragments into smaller families.

Some still provide useful answers.

KH- — 16 short entries

khadi, khaf, khafs, khaki, khan, khans, khaph, khat, khats, kheda, khet, kheth, khets, khi, khis, khoum

Khaki, khan and khat are the strongest familiar anchors.

KU- — 15

kudo, kudos, kudu, kudus, kudzu, kue, kues, kugel, kukri, kulak, kumys, kurta, kuru, kurus, kusso

Kudo, kudos, kudu, kudzu and kuru make KU- more accessible than its small total suggests.

KY- — 12

kyack, kyak, kyaks, kyar, kyars, kyat, kyats, kylix, kyrie, kyte, kytes, kythe

The route contains no three-letter entry.

KR- — 11

kraal, kraft, krait, kraut, kreep, krill, kris, krona, krone, kroon, krubi

Krill and kris are the two I would expect to retrieve most reliably.

KL- — 4

The complete short group is:

klong, kloof, kluge, klutz

A tiny route, but the last two are memorable.

Three routes are almost edge cases

KB-, KV- and KW- together contain only 18 words in the entire dictionary.

KB-

The complete route is:

kbar, kbars

Both contain four or five letters.

KV-

There are 11 entries in total, but only two are short:

kvas, kvass

The longer route includes the kvetch family.

KW-

The complete route contains five entries:

kwacha, kwanza, kwanzas, kwashiorkor, kwashiorkors

None contains five letters or fewer.

That makes KW- unique among the 13 K routes: it exists in the dictionary but contributes nothing to the 354-word short pool.

In a timed Find the Word round, I would not search KW- unless one of those complete words was already familiar.

A route can be real and still have almost no practical rescue value.

Ten plausible modern spellings that are absent

The dictionary is fixed, so familiar current vocabulary is not guaranteed to appear.

These exact strings are absent:

kpop, kombucha, kombuchas, ketos, kawaii, kratom, kratoms, keylogger, keyloggers, kibibyte

That does not mean all ten are bad English.

It means those exact forms are not accepted in the current Find the Word file.

The contrast inside K is useful because other relatively modern-looking entries do appear:

keto, karaoke, kayaks, kilobyte, keyword, keyboard, kimchi, kiosks, kickboxing, kiwi

So there is no safe rule such as:

“Modern K-words are missing.”

Some are present. Some are absent.

The game has to be checked against the actual file rather than against how current or familiar a spelling feels.

K coverage ladder

A visitor does not need to study all 354 short K-words at once.

The route counts give a measurable stopping point.

Level 1 — Three routes

Search:

KI- + KA- + KE-

Coverage:

216 of 354 short K-words — 61.0%

Level 2 — Add KO- and KN-

Coverage becomes:

292 of 354 — 82.5%

This is where I would aim first.

Five routes expose more than four fifths of the short K section.

Level 3 — Add KH- and KU-

Coverage:

323 of 354 — 91.2%

Level 4 — Add KY- and KR-

Coverage:

346 of 354 — 97.7%

Level 5 — Complete the short map

Add:

KL-, KB- and KV-

Coverage:

354 of 354 — 100%

KW- contributes no three-to-five-letter entry, so it does not change the short-word percentage.

For me, that is the useful way to learn K: not 1,715 isolated spellings, but a route map where the first five lanes already expose 82.5% of the short answers.
